Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina

The Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina, situated in the square of the same name, has very ancient origins. Its earliest part dates back to the 5th century, when the first church was built.

The basilica actually stands on the site of a Roman domus, which probably belonged to a matron named Lucina, remembered in historical sources as a benefactor of the Christian community who had made one of her properties available for worship. It was in the first half of the 5th century that the site was converted into a church. We find mention of the first basilica in the *Liber Pontificalis*, the book containing the biographies of the popes, in the entry on the life of Sixtus III, who was pope from 432 to 440.

Over the centuries, numerous alterations were carried out which redefined its layout and décor. The current layout derives mainly from the 17th-century reconstruction. This project involved the spatial reorganisation of the side chapels, the introduction of a fully Baroque architectural style, and the creation of a dramatic chancel designed to guide the faithful’s gaze towards the Eucharistic mystery, in line with the requirements of the post-Tridentine liturgy.

The façade features a sober, classical design, with an architraved portico and a triangular pediment. The interior of the basilica, originally a three-nave structure, now consists of a single nave with richly decorated chapels – five on the left-hand side and four on the right – as one of them houses the foundations of the bell tower.

Of particular note is the Fonseca Chapel, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1664): a unique work due to the quality of its integration of architecture, sculpture and light, featuring the famous bust of the patron, the physician Gabriele Fonseca, depicted as he leans out of the marble window – a masterful example of Baroque portraiture. The basilica also houses works by other leading figures of the seventeenth century, including Guido Reni, a master of Baroque classicism who succeeded in combining the emotional power of the scene with formal composure, and the creator of the Crucifix that crowns the altar, beneath which lies the graticola – the relic commemorating the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence – which has made the basilica an important centre of devotion.

San Lorenzo in Lucina is thus a place rich in layers of history, capable of recounting centuries of transformations, devotions and commissions.
