Church of Santa Maria in Trivio

In the heart of the Trevi district, just a short walk from the famous fountain, stands the Church of Santa Maria in Trivio. Its origins date back to the 6th century, when a ‘xenodochio’ – a hospice for pilgrims founded by General Belisarius – stood on this site: the ancient title of Santa Maria in Xenodochio derives from this place of welcome, later changed to Santa Maria in Trivio in the 15th century. In 1571, the church was renovated by the architect Giacomo del Duca; since 1854, it has been entrusted to the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Most Precious Blood, founded in 1815 by Saint Gaspare del Bufalo to continue the work of restoring moral standards and educating the people through preaching. The church houses the remains of Saint Gaspare del Bufalo himself and of Blessed Giovanni Merlini, his disciple.

The simple travertine façade leads into a single-nave interior with side chapels, dominated by the splendid vault frescoed by Antonio Gherardi with ‘Stories of the Virgin’. Other masterpieces include: the ‘Triumph of the Cross’, the ‘Madonna of Mercy’ and the 15th-century icon of the ‘Madonna and Child’ in the apse.
